Why rain sounds help you sleep

Steady rain is close to pink noise: a broad, even hush with no pattern your brain needs to track. The individual drops are random, so nothing repeats and nothing surprises you. Many people also associate rain with being safe indoors.

How we make the rain

There is no recording here. We shape random noise into the bed of distant rainfall, then scatter tens of thousands of tiny drop impacts across the stereo field, each with its own size and decay, plus an occasional plink off a hard surface. The result is 45 seconds of rain that joins seamlessly and plays for as long as you like.

Build a rain mix

Rain + thunder makes a storm. Rain + brown noise is the Deep Sleep preset: the brown layer fills in the bass that small speakers miss. Rain + fireplace is a cabin evening.

Questions

Are these rain sounds free?

Yes. They are generated in your browser, with no account, download or ads.

Will the rain play all night?

Yes, until you pause it or the sleep timer fades it out. Keep the tab open.

Is rain noise better than white noise for sleep?

For most people it feels softer and more natural. It masks less high-pitched sound than white noise, so for loud voices try adding pink noise.

Can I add thunder?

Yes, raise the Thunder fader, or pick the Storm Night preset on the home page.
