How thunder sounds are built
Thunder rolls because sound from different parts of a lightning channel, which can be kilometres long, reaches you at different times. We imitate that with a series of low rumbles that overlap and fade, and a sharp crack at the start of near strikes. Distant thunder loses its highs on the way to you, so ours is mostly bass.
Is thunder good for sleep?
Rumbles are occasional, so they break the steady masking that makes noise useful for sleep. If they wake you, keep thunder below the rain level, or choose rain alone.

Roughly two to three thunder episodes per minute of audio, each lasting several seconds.
Why is the thunder quiet on my phone?
